YEDA (Youth Education and Development Association) was founded in 2014 by Ramadhani Olomwene, a Congolese refugee residing in Kakuma, Kenya. Ramadhani, who is a self-taught expert in Paralegal studies, Permaculture, and Beauty Therapy, established YEDA with a clear vision: to empower fellow refugees by utilizing his skills to address the pressing challenges faced by displaced communities. Through his initiatives, he sought to create sustainable solutions that would enable refugees to support their families, generate income, and regain their independence

Since its inception, YEDA has successfully implemented several community-driven programs, which have had a positive and lasting impact on the lives of many refugees. Among its most notable initiatives, the Permaculture Program has been especially transformative. By teaching refugees how to grow food sustainably and sell surplus produce in local markets, YEDA has helped many individuals and families achieve financial self-sufficiency and reduce their reliance on external aid.

Organizations are providing training in basic computer skills, coding, digital literacy, and even advanced skills like web and app development. This equips young refugees with skills that can lead to employment opportunities.

Limited ICT Access and Digital Literacy: YEDA recognizes that access to information and communication technologies (ICT) is critical for the growth of both the organization and the refugees it serves. Limited access to digital tools and skills hampers YEDA’s ability to document its activities, offer digital literacy training, and access global job markets. The lack of digital infrastructure also limits opportunities for the youth to acquire valuable skills for the modern workforce.

Yeda is seeking networking opportunities to expand her professional connections. She's eager to meet individuals in her field and related industries. Yeda is particularly interested in learning about new trends and potential collaborations.

Yeda's approachable, enthusiastic, and ready to engage in meaningful conversations. Connect with Yeda to explore shared interests and build a valuable professional relationship.

In the challenging environment of Kakuma Refugee Camp, where resources are limited and opportunities scarce, youth empowerment is not just a choice, it's a necessity.

At Youth Education and Development Association, we believe that empowering the community, especially its youth, is the key to unlocking a brighter future for Kakuma.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND & INTRODUCTION

Kakuma refugee camp is in the North-western region of Kenya. As of 30th APRIL 2022, a total of 1,826,351 mostly South Sudanese refugees resided in Kakuma Refugee Camps (Kakuma 1, Kakuma 2, Kakuma 3, and Kakuma 4 camps). Inside the camp we have so many nationalities such as Somalia, Congolese (DRC), Burundian, Ethiopian, Rwandese… and others from Asia.In Kakuma refugee camp and Kalobeyei Settlement we observe so many characters of people (good and bad) according to the different nationalities we have.

However, the refugees are killing themselves, so many earlier marriage cases, and much cases of diseases. Regarding to the health problem, we observe many of refugees are admitted at hospital, after doing assessment we noticed many of refugees they don’t take care of their lives themselves nowadays, 70% of South Sudanese do not use latrines they have an expression says using latrine is to minimize the cost of life.

Furthermore, the communities do not have knowledge for hygiene promotion that means, in the camps there is poor hygiene which is the main cause of the epidemics appeared any moment. For that the population in the camps facing more consequences, we can see more deaths every day in both Kakuma and Kalobeyei settlement ( we can see 30 people die and other 100 being admitted everyday ) all that situation is caused by lack of hygiene promotion within the camps and its surrounding. The health department is available in both Kakuma Camp and Kalobeyei settlement, the community health promoters (CHP) are there and they do mobilize the communities but still, the impact of the problem is very higher.

Nowadays we can see some cases of the current problem that we have in the camps in the villages bordering both Kakuma refugee camp and Kalobeyei settlement so many people (refugees and host) are living in dangerous health situation. This is how, Youth Education and Development Association (YEDA) is standing up for looking for quick solution within all Kakuma refugee camp, Kalobeyei settlement and host communities bordering the camps. Unfortunately, Youth Education and Development association (YEDA) does not have enough resources for facilitating the current project, now without hesitating we come before your organization to solicit the funds that can help us fight this situation and mitigate it.
